How to Update Chrome as Its Release Cycle Speeds Up

September 21, 2026

Chrome’s standard release schedule is moving faster this September. Google’s March announcement set a two-week cycle beginning with Chrome 153 on September 8, 2026, and scheduled Chrome 154 for September 22. With that next milestone approaching, here is how to check that your desktop browser has applied its available updates.

What changed—and what did not

The change shortens the standard beta and stable milestone interval from four weeks to two across desktop, Android and iOS. Google says smaller releases should make changes easier to debug; that is its stated rationale, rather than a guarantee that every release will be trouble-free.

Extended Stable retains its eight-week cycle. Google also says Chromebook releases follow dedicated platform testing. A managed work device may therefore follow a different approved schedule from a personal computer.

1. Open Chrome’s update screen

On a Windows or Mac computer, open Chrome’s three-dot menu, choose Help, then About Google Chrome. This page displays the installed version and checks for updates. These steps follow Google’s update instructions.

2. Relaunch to finish applying an update

If the page offers Relaunch, save your work and use it. Chrome normally restores regular tabs and windows, but Incognito windows do not reopen. A downloaded update can remain pending until the browser restarts.

3. Check the result

Return to About Google Chrome after restarting. Read the update status as well as the version number. If an error appears, address that error rather than assuming that an absent Relaunch button means everything succeeded.

4. Follow the right route for your device

On Linux, Google directs users to their package manager. On a Chromebook, the browser is updated through the operating system. For a managed work computer, ask IT about the approved channel or an update error before changing administrative settings.

A faster release schedule makes a simple habit useful: check periodically, save open work and complete required restarts. There is no need to switch to a testing channel merely to receive normal stable updates.
