How to Find and Back Up Your BitLocker Recovery Key

September 22, 2026

Locate the 48-digit BitLocker recovery password and verify that a safe backup exists before a Windows recovery screen appears.

Know what you are looking for

The BitLocker recovery password is a 48-digit number Windows may request when an encrypted drive cannot unlock normally. The recovery screen displays a key ID; match that ID with the saved password when more than one key is listed. Microsoft Support cannot recreate a missing recovery password.

Find an existing backup

  1. For a personal device, sign in to the Microsoft account associated with the PC and check its recovery keys using Microsoft’s Find your BitLocker recovery key instructions.
  2. For a work or school device, check the recovery information available to you through your organization, or contact its IT support team. Managed devices may store keys in Microsoft Entra ID or Active Directory.
  3. Check any safe printout, USB drive, or saved file you created when encryption was enabled. Keep the recovery password separate from the protected PC.

Back it up while Windows still opens

  1. On the PC, search Start for Manage BitLocker.
  2. Beside the encrypted drive, select Back up your recovery key.
  3. Choose an allowed location, such as your Microsoft account, a USB drive, a file on another drive, or a printout, then select Finish.
  4. Verify you can access the backup and store any removable copy separately from the PC. On a managed device, follow your organization’s key-handling policy.

If you are already locked out

Use another device to access the account or support team holding the recovery password. Check the key ID on the recovery screen against the saved record. If the key cannot be found and the triggering change cannot be undone, Microsoft’s recovery guidance may require resetting Windows, which can remove files.
