Qualcomm renews Apple global patent licence, effective April 2027

September 25, 2026

Qualcomm announced on September 24 that it has renewed its global patent licence agreement with Apple. The renewed agreement takes effect on April 1, 2027, according to the company’s statement.

The brief announcement does not disclose financial terms or specify the duration of the renewed agreement. John Han, who leads Qualcomm Technology Licensing, welcomed the extension.

A patent agreement with a defined start date

The announcement concerns intellectual-property licensing. Qualcomm’s corporate description distinguishes its QTL licensing business and patent portfolio from the QCT semiconductor business operated through Qualcomm Technologies.

That distinction limits what can be concluded from this release: it does not announce an extension of a chip-supply contract, identify future iPhone components or establish how many Qualcomm modems Apple will buy.

The modem transition remains separate

Reuters reported that the renewal comes as Apple works to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm modems. The report also noted that an existing licence was due to expire on March 31, 2027, immediately before the new agreement’s effective date.

For readers tracking the two companies, the confirmed development is continuity in patent licensing. The undisclosed commercial terms leave questions about the agreement’s length and financial effect unanswered.
