Azure tags are name-value pairs that help organize resources. Start with an agreed convention, such as Environment=Test and CostCenter=IT.
Before you start
Use a resource type that supports tags and an account with write access to the resource. Contributor or an appropriate resource-specific Contributor role provides this access. Tag Contributor has portal limitations for resources and resource groups.
Tags are stored as plain text. Keep passwords, secrets, and sensitive personal data out of tag values.
Add tags to one resource
- Open the resource in the Azure portal and inspect its existing tags on Overview.
- Select Add tags.
- Enter each tag name and value using your agreed spelling.
- Select Save and confirm the tags appear on Overview.
Apply tags to several resources
In a resource list, select the checkboxes for the intended resources and choose Assign tags. Add the names and values, then select Save. Open a sample resource to verify the result.
Find and maintain tagged resources
Search for Tags in the portal and select a tag to view matching resources. Keep values consistent: tag names are case-insensitive for operations, while values are case-sensitive.
Resources do not automatically inherit resource-group or subscription tags. Apply them directly or use an appropriate Azure Policy.
