How to Create and Share a Scored Quiz in Microsoft Forms

October 9, 2026

Microsoft Forms can create quizzes with scored questions, correct-answer feedback, response controls, and results that can be exported to Excel. This makes it useful for training checks, onboarding, classroom assessments, and internal knowledge reviews. [1]

1. Start a new quiz

  1. Sign in at forms.office.com.
  2. Select New Quiz.
  3. Enter a title and, if helpful, a description that explains the purpose and audience.
  4. Dismiss the Copilot draft panel if you want to build the quiz manually. Copilot-created drafts require a Microsoft 365 account and Copilot license.

Forms saves the quiz while you work, so you can return to it later without manually creating a separate draft file. [1]

2. Add questions and answers

  1. Select Quick start with and choose a question type such as Choice, Text, Rating, Date, Ranking, Likert, or File upload.
  2. Enter the question and add the answer options.
  3. Select the check mark beside each correct answer.
  4. Enter a value in Points to control how much the question contributes to the score.
  5. Turn on Required when a respondent must answer the question.
  6. Use question settings such as multiple answers, shuffle options, subtitles, or branching when they fit the assessment.

For important questions, add a short answer message or explanation. Explanations help respondents understand why an answer is correct instead of seeing only a number at the end.

3. Configure quiz and response settings

Open Settings for the quiz. Decide whether anyone can respond, only people in your organization can respond, or only specific people or groups can respond. For an internal assessment, enable Record name and One response per person when you need attributable, single-attempt results. [2]

Set a start date and end date when the quiz should be available only during a defined window. You can also set a time limit, shuffle questions, show a progress bar for multi-section quizzes, hide the option to submit another response, and customize the thank-you message.

4. Decide what respondents can see

Under the quiz options, review Show results automatically. When enabled, respondents see correct and incorrect indicators after submitting. Clear the setting when answers must remain hidden until a trainer or instructor reviews them. If your tenant supports it, answer explanations can provide the reasoning behind the correct answer. [2]

5. Preview and test the quiz

  1. Select Preview on a computer, or the preview control on mobile.
  2. Answer every question, including an intentional incorrect answer.
  3. Select Submit and confirm the score, feedback, and thank-you message.
  4. Return to editing if a question, answer, point value, or required setting is wrong.

Use a private browser window or a test account to verify the real respondent experience. This is especially important when the quiz is restricted to people in your organization or specific groups.

6. Share the quiz

When testing is complete, use Forms’ sharing controls to copy the response link or distribute the quiz through the channel your audience already uses. Tell respondents whether they need to sign in, whether they have one attempt, and when responses close.

Practical checklist

Before sending the link, confirm the correct answers, points, required questions, response audience, time window, result visibility, and test submission. After responses arrive, Forms provides real-time summaries, individual results, and an option to export results to Excel for deeper analysis. [1]
