How to Record Your Screen with Snipping Tool in Windows 11

October 18, 2026

Windows 11 includes a built-in screen recording workflow in Snipping Tool. It lets you select a rectangular area, record what happens there, stop the recording, and save the result. This is useful for short demonstrations, issue reports, and training clips.

1. Open the recording tool

  1. Open the Start menu and search for Snipping Tool.
  2. Open the app.
  3. Select the Record button, then select New.

Microsoft also documents the shortcut Windows key + Shift + R for opening the video capture overlay. [1]

2. Select the recording area

  1. Click and drag to draw a rectangle around the part of the screen you want to capture.
  2. Include the complete application area and any controls the viewer needs to see.
  3. Adjust the selection before starting.

Record only what is necessary. A focused capture is easier to watch and reduces the chance of including private messages, account details, or unrelated windows.

3. Start recording

  1. Select Start.
  2. Wait for the short countdown.
  3. Perform the steps you want to demonstrate.

Keep the demonstration deliberate. Pause briefly after important clicks so the viewer can follow the action. Avoid moving unrelated windows across the recording area.

4. Stop and save the video

  1. Select Stop when the demonstration is complete.
  2. Review the captured clip.
  3. Select Save and choose the filename and location.

Microsoft’s support guidance says you can save the recording as-is or select Edit in Clipchamp for further editing. [1]

5. Add captions or audio in Clipchamp

When a recording needs accessibility or narration, open it in Clipchamp. Microsoft documents options to use the Captions tab to transcribe media and the Audio tab to adjust or detach audio. Review generated captions before sharing because technical names and commands may need correction.

6. Use Xbox Game Bar for app and game capture

Snipping Tool is useful for a selected rectangular area. For an app or game-focused capture, Microsoft also documents Xbox Game Bar. Press Windows key + G, open the capture controls, select Record, and stop when finished. Recordings are available from the captures area. [2]

7. Protect information before sharing

Review the video before sending it to a customer, colleague, or public channel. Look for email addresses, notifications, passwords, personal information, and browser tabs that were visible during the recording. Crop or re-record when sensitive information cannot be removed cleanly.

Common mistakes

  • Selecting a recording area that cuts off the important control.
  • Leaving private notifications visible.
  • Moving too quickly for the viewer to follow.
  • Assuming the recording includes narration without checking audio settings.
  • Sharing the video without reviewing the final file.
