Surface Laptop Ultra and RTX Spark: Windows on Arm Gets Its Real Test

October 20, 2026

Nvidia’s first Windows PC chip is now in real laptops, and Microsoft put its own name on the flagship. The Surface Laptop Ultra, built on Nvidia’s Arm-based RTX Spark, was priced and opened for preorder at Microsoft’s October 7 event. It is the most serious attempt yet to loosen the grip Intel, AMD and Qualcomm have on Windows laptops. Whether it works for business comes down to a boring question: will your apps run?

What was announced

  • The chip: RTX Spark pairs a 20-core Arm CPU, co-developed with MediaTek, with a Blackwell GPU of up to 6,144 CUDA cores. It supports up to 128 GB of unified LPDDR5X memory, and Nvidia claims up to 1 petaflop of FP4 AI performance.
  • The laptop: Surface Laptop Ultra starts at US$2,599.99 (24 GB memory, 512 GB SSD, Windows 11 Home) and reaches US$5,899.99 across 11 listed US configurations. Preorders opened October 7 with a scheduled release of October 16.
  • The desktop: the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, a compact PC on the same chip with 128 GB of memory, is priced at US$5,999.
  • The ecosystem: Asus, Dell, HP, Lenovo and MSI opened preorders for their own RTX Spark laptops the same day. Nvidia has said the rollout starts with six premium laptops before growing to roughly 30 laptops and 10 mini PCs.
  • The OS: it runs Windows 11. Windows 12 was not announced.

Why this is different from earlier Windows-on-Arm pushes

For years, Qualcomm was the only game in town for Arm-based Windows PCs. That exclusivity has lapsed, and Nvidia brings something Qualcomm could not: a mature GPU and the CUDA software stack. The pitch from Microsoft and Nvidia is local AI, meaning agents and models that run on the laptop instead of in the cloud, with new Windows security controls limiting what those agents can touch.

Where to stay skeptical

  • App compatibility is still the risk. Windows on Arm has struggled for years with legacy apps, drivers and peripherals. A faster chip does not fix a VPN client, EDR agent or line-of-business app built only for x64.
  • The AI numbers are peak figures. One petaflop of FP4 is a best-case number for narrow workloads, not a productivity benchmark.
  • The price is high. The entry configuration has just 24 GB of memory, and a 32 GB Windows 11 Pro model is listed at US$3,299.99. Memory costs are rising across the industry, so do not expect discounts soon.
  • It is first-generation hardware. Wait for independent battery, thermal and sustained-performance testing before committing a fleet.

What IT teams should do now

  1. Pilot three to five units with power users in creative, development or data roles, not the whole fleet.
  2. Inventory Arm-risky software: VPN, EDR, DLP, printer drivers, legacy plug-ins. Test under emulation.
  3. Confirm your security vendors officially support Windows on Arm with Nvidia silicon.
  4. Verify Intune and Autopilot enrollment, and the firmware and driver update path.
  5. Hold broad purchasing until independent reviews and local pricing are available.

Pricing above is US list pricing. Canadian pricing and availability were not found in the sources reviewed; confirm local pricing with your hardware supplier.
