TSMC’s Record Quarter: What AI Silicon Demand Looks Like in Numbers

October 20, 2026

TSMC’s third-quarter report is the cleanest read on AI chip demand in the market, because it makes the processors for Nvidia, Apple and others. The result: another record quarter, and guidance that points higher.

The numbers

  • Revenue: NT$1.49 trillion, about US$46.7 billion, up 50.9% year over year and above the company’s own guidance range of $44.6 billion to $45.8 billion.
  • Profit: net income of NT$763.06 billion, up 68.7% year over year, reported as a sixth straight quarter of record profit.
  • Mix: high-performance computing, which includes AI accelerators, made up 68% of revenue and grew 22% from the prior quarter.
  • Guidance: Q4 revenue of $52.3 billion to $54.3 billion.
  • Spending: third-quarter capex was $13.8 billion. In July, TSMC raised its full-year 2026 capex guidance to $60 billion to $64 billion.

Management described AI demand as “extremely robust” and pointed to agentic AI as a new driver, including more demand for CPUs in AI data centres.

Where to be skeptical

  • HPC is not pure AI. The 68% figure includes other high-performance chips, so it overstates AI exposure.
  • Margins face pressure. Management has said the faster ramp of its 2nm process will weigh on margins near term, and capex keeps climbing.
  • Concentration cuts both ways. TSMC’s strength depends on a few customers’ spending plans and on geopolitical stability.
  • Memory is the bottleneck elsewhere. Strong AI chip demand is part of why DRAM and SSD supply is tight for PCs.

Market backdrop

On October 13 the Nasdaq Composite closed at 27,203.53 and the S&P 500 at 7,805.83, with the S&P up roughly 14% in 2026 on AI-related stocks. Zacks expects Q3 S&P 500 earnings up 24.3% year over year, with technology up 43.3%.
