Microsoft Positions Hyderabad Region as an AI Hub

September 21, 2026

Microsoft designated its India South Central cloud region in Hyderabad as a strategic hub for Asia and the Global South on September 21, 2026. The company outlined the region’s role at its AI Infrastructure Summit, linking it to its US$20.5 billion investment commitment in India. Microsoft’s announcement describes the infrastructure as operational, with enterprise customers already using it.

Today’s update follows an August launch

The timing matters: Microsoft announced general availability on August 6. September’s announcement is therefore an update on the region’s strategic role, rather than its first day of general availability.

India South Central is Microsoft’s fourth cloud region in India, joining regions in Pune, Chennai and Mumbai. The August announcement describes three Availability Zones and identifies early customers including Adani Group, Bajaj Finserv and HDFC Bank.

What the infrastructure announcement establishes

Microsoft says the region gives customers another location for eligible cloud workloads and supports its expansion of AI infrastructure. The company also states that services become available in the region over time. A region’s availability therefore does not mean every Azure service or configuration is available there immediately.

The deployment questions remain service-specific

For an organisation assessing Hyderabad, the practical questions are which services are available, whether required capacity can be obtained, and how the location fits its application and recovery design. Those checks are separate from the announcement’s broader investment figures.
