Mistral previews Large 4, with open weights planned for late October

October 6, 2026

Mistral launched a public API preview of Mistral Large 4 on October 6, with the model’s weights scheduled for release by the end of the month. The preview is available through Mistral Studio.

The company describes Large 4, nicknamed Le Chonk, as a natively multimodal model with one trillion total parameters and 49 billion active parameters. It says training used 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in its European data centres.

Mistral reports strengths in coding, agent workflows and enterprise tasks such as cybersecurity, finance and law. Its comparative performance statements are company claims and depend on the evaluations used.

Preview access comes before downloadable weights

The launch provides API access today; the open-weight release remains a future step. Mistral says it is continuing real-world red-teaming with security specialists and public authorities before that release, and will publish more architecture and methodology details as the rollout progresses.
