Microsoft’s current retirement guidance sets the end of Microsoft Dev Box for September 18, 2028, at 17:00 UTC. Its closing-down period began September 14, 2026.
The guidance recommends Windows 365 for virtualized developer environments while allowing existing Dev Box deployments to serve as a temporary bridge during transition planning.
A migration, not an identical replacement
Microsoft says replacement options are not one-to-one equivalents. Organizations need to validate architecture, management, security, performance and the developer experience.
Its guide calls for reviewing feature dependencies, licensing and capacity before moving workflows. Existing development images, networking and provisioning arrangements therefore need assessment rather than an assumption of automatic compatibility.
What Microsoft outlined this week
In its September 14 developer update, Microsoft described prepared Windows 11 environments, custom images, configurations up to 32 vCPUs and GPU options.
The same post distinguishes future capabilities: VM customization is planned, Microsoft Execution Containers support is expected to become generally available in coming months, and some access controls remain in preview.
The retirement deadline is two years away; it is not a September 2026 shutdown.
