AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon announced on October 1 that they have entered a joint venture agreement to expand satellite-enabled connectivity in underserved US areas. The arrangement follows their May proposal to pool limited spectrum resources.
Wireless industry veteran Paul Roth will serve as interim chief executive while the partners search for a permanent CEO. Each founding carrier will have representation on the venture’s board.
Planned service scope
The companies say the venture will complement ground-based networks, improve direct-to-device access and develop common technical specifications. Existing carrier-satellite agreements remain in place, and partners can pursue connectivity projects independently.
The release sets out intended benefits rather than announcing an immediate nationwide service upgrade. It does not specify consumer pricing, supported handsets or a commercial rollout date. The scope is the United States; Canadian availability was not announced.
