Google and Constellation Energy announced on October 6 a 20-year power purchase agreement intended to add 890 megawatts of nuclear capacity to the PJM grid. The new output would come from upgrades at 11 existing nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Constellation plans more than $4.3 billion in investment, according to the companies. The first capacity increase is expected in 2028. The spending figure describes Constellation’s planned investment, rather than a disclosed price paid by Google for electricity.
A separate 15-year agreement covers an additional 2,700 MW from existing generation. The companies also expanded their technology partnership for Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise.
Additional capacity is planned, not yet operating
The nuclear component increases output at operating sites through equipment and efficiency improvements. It does not announce an already-completed reactor or immediate delivery of the full 890 MW. Claimed reliability, cost and operational benefits remain objectives of the agreements.
