How to Reset Your Windows 11 PC and Choose the Right Reset Option

October 26, 2026

Resetting reinstalls Windows when a PC is slow, broken or being passed on. This guide follows Microsoft Support’s Windows 11 steps and explains which option to pick.

Before you reset

  • Back up important files. Depending on the option, apps, settings and personal files may be removed.
  • Have your BitLocker recovery key ready if the device is encrypted.

Steps

  1. Open Settings and go to System > Recovery.
  2. Under Recovery options, choose the reset PC option.
  3. Select the options you want.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Choose your options

Option What happens
Keep my files Reinstalls Windows and removes apps and settings. Personal files stay. Restore preinstalled apps reapplies manufacturer customisations.
Remove everything Reinstalls Windows and removes personal files, apps and settings. Clean data also erases and cleans the drive, which takes longer and makes recovery harder. Microsoft recommends it when donating, recycling or selling a PC.
Cloud download Downloads a fresh copy of Windows with the latest updates. Microsoft says it helps if local files are corrupted or missing.
Local reinstall Uses files already on the PC. Faster on a slow connection but may not include the latest updates.

During the reset

  • The screen may stay black for a long time, sometimes over 15 minutes, and the device may restart on its own.
  • Don’t restart it yourself. Microsoft warns that manually restarting during this process could cause the reset to fail.

Other notes

  • You can also reset from the Windows Recovery Environment.
  • The data erasure feature is aimed at consumers and doesn’t meet government or industry data erasure standards. Don’t rely on it where those standards apply.

What Microsoft’s page doesn’t say

It doesn’t name the exact screen where the cloud versus local choice appears, and gives no time estimates or internet requirements for cloud download.

Quick checklist

  • Files backed up and BitLocker key saved
  • Power connected and device left alone
  • Clean data chosen if the PC is leaving your hands
