Amazon pledges more than $1 billion for US data-center communities

October 2, 2026

Amazon has announced Built Together, a community investment framework that it says will add more than US$1 billion over five years in US communities hosting its data centers. AWS chief executive Matt Garman outlined the initiative alongside a new data-center commitment.

The program covers education and workforce training, energy affordability, water conservation and locally chosen priorities. Amazon plans to cover remaining student costs after financial aid through agreements with community colleges, with rollout expected in the coming months.

Transparency commitments

The company also says it no longer uses nondisclosure agreements with government agencies on its projects. It pledges annual public reporting on energy use, efficiency, water consumption and carbon-free energy.

These are announced commitments and projected benefits. Delivery, participation and local outcomes remain to be established as the programs roll out.
