How to Arrange Apps with Snap Layouts in Windows 11

October 27, 2026

Snap layouts in Windows 11 let you arrange several apps on one screen. For a practical first test, open a document and a browser so you can compare them side by side.

Enable the controls

  1. Open Settings > System > Multitasking.
  2. Turn on Snap windows and expand its options.
  3. Enable layout suggestions when hovering over a window’s maximize button. Enable suggestions for what to place next to a snapped window if you want Snap Assist.

Choose a layout

  1. Activate the first app and press Windows + Z, or hover over its maximize button.
  2. Choose a region in a layout. The layouts offered depend on your display size.
  3. Use the thumbnails in Snap Assist to fill the remaining regions with other open apps.
  4. Drag the dividing line between adjoining snapped windows to adjust their proportions.

Use a quick alternative

Press Windows + Left Arrow or Windows + Right Arrow to snap the active app to a side. You can also drag a window toward a screen edge.

Verify and troubleshoot

Confirm both apps remain readable and visible without overlap. Try a two-column layout before adding more windows; extra regions are only useful if the content still fits.

If the flyout or thumbnails do not appear, revisit the related Snap windows checkboxes. To disable snapping, turn off Snap windows in the same settings page.
