How to Export an Azure Resource Group as an ARM Template

October 6, 2026

Export an Azure resource group to obtain an ARM JSON template of its current configuration. Treat the result as a starting point for infrastructure code that needs review before deployment.

Export selected resources

  1. Sign in to Azure portal and open the resource group.
  2. Select the checkboxes beside the resources you want. Use the checkbox beside Name to select all.
  3. Select Export template from the top menu, then ARM Template. The left-menu export option includes the entire group.
  4. Review the generated template. Include parameters is selected by default; clear it only if you plan to author your own parameters.
  5. Download the export and open it locally for inspection.

Verify before reuse

Check export warnings and confirm the expected resource types and properties appear. Review hard-coded values, API versions and missing password parameters before planning a deployment.

Export can fail, does not support Azure Data Factory resources, and has a 200-resource group limit. To retrieve the original deployment template instead, open the group’s Deployments, select a deployment, then Template; later changes are absent.
