Photonic and Microsoft Expand Quantum Resource Estimation Work

September 23, 2026

Photonic and Microsoft announced work on quantum resource estimation on September 23, 2026, extending their existing collaboration. The project aims to make the requirements of future distributed quantum computers easier to evaluate before large-scale systems are available.

Estimating the full system

The company press release, republished by The Quantum Insider, says the work will examine physical qubit counts, runtime and system overhead. It combines Photonic’s distributed-computing and error-correction work with Microsoft’s Quantum Resource Estimation framework.

A central question is how architecture, links between processors and error-correction choices affect the resources an algorithm requires. Photonic plans to examine its SHYPS error-correction code family using Microsoft’s estimator.

What a resource estimate tells developers

Microsoft’s explanation of resource estimation describes a modelling process based on assumptions about hardware and error correction. Researchers can compare configurations to understand trade-offs between the number of qubits and the time required to run an application.

Those estimates help inform engineering choices. They do not demonstrate that a proposed machine has already run the workload, or establish when it will become commercially available.

Release status

The announcement describes the collaboration ahead of the release of the associated estimator capabilities. Its immediate significance is better planning for interconnected quantum systems; it is not an announcement of a new production quantum-computing service.
