Prysmian Plans Lower-Carbon Cables for Amazon Data Center

September 18, 2026

Prysmian announced on September 18, 2026, that electrical cables using ELYSIS aluminum have been contracted for installation at an Amazon data center in Ohio.

The project involves Rio Tinto’s aluminum supply, manufacturing at Prysmian’s Sedalia, Missouri, facility, and distribution support from Wesco.

What changes in production

According to the companies, ELYSIS replaces conventional carbon anodes with materials that release oxygen during smelting, eliminating direct greenhouse gas emissions from that process.

Rio Tinto says the aluminum supplied for the cables was produced in Quebec using hydropower.

What the claim covers

The announcement concerns the materials used in electrical infrastructure. Eliminating direct smelting emissions does not mean that mining, transport, cable manufacturing or the entire data center has no emissions.

Prysmian describes this as the first known data-center use of inert-anode-smelted aluminum. That characterization is the company’s claim. The release does not quantify the project’s total lifecycle emissions savings.
