Recover one missing file with the recycle bin or version history, or roll back an entire OneDrive after widespread changes.
Choose the smallest recovery action
If one file is missing, search OneDrive and check that you are in the correct account. For a deleted file, use the OneDrive recycle bin. For unwanted edits to a file that still exists, use Version history. Reserve Restore your OneDrive for broader incidents because it reverses changes across files and folders.
Restore a deleted file
- Sign in to the OneDrive website with the account that owned the file.
- Open Recycle bin, select the item, and choose Restore.
- Return to its original location and confirm the file opens correctly. If it is a shared work file, check with the owner or IT team when necessary.
Restore an earlier file version
- In OneDrive, select the file and open Version history.
- Review the available versions and restore the version you need.
- Open the file to verify its contents before making further edits.
Roll back the whole OneDrive
Microsoft 365 subscribers can use Settings → Restore OneDrive for work or school accounts to choose a restore point within the last 30 days. Review the activity chart before confirming: actions after the selected point are undone, and newer files and folders go to the recycle bin. Coordinate with collaborators before a broad rollback.
Important limits
A permanently deleted file may not be recoverable through the OneDrive recycle bin. Recovery features are time-limited and depend on the account and organization’s retention settings. If the incident involves a departed employee’s account, ask an administrator to check Microsoft’s separate deleted-OneDrive recovery process.
