Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft 365 Copilot is Microsoft’s AI assistant built into Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams. It works from your own business data, within the permissions each person already has.
- Best for: knowledge workers who write, analyze, and attend many meetings
- Where it runs: inside Microsoft 365 apps and a dedicated chat
- Requires: an eligible Microsoft 365 plan
- Sold per user
What Microsoft 365 Copilot does for your business
The features clients ask about most, with an example of each in daily use.
Chat grounded in your work data
Ask questions and get answers drawn from your emails, files, meetings and chats that you already have access to. In practice: Ask “what did we agree with Northwind last month?” and get an answer with links to the source.
Drafting and rewriting
Create a first draft, shorten it, change the tone or turn notes into a document. In practice: Turn a rough call summary into a clean follow-up email to a client.
Meeting recaps
Summaries, decisions and action items from Teams meetings, including for people who missed them. In practice: Catch up on a missed project meeting in two minutes.
Data analysis in Excel
Ask questions about a table in plain language and get formulas, charts and summaries. In practice: Ask which customers have not ordered in 90 days and get a list.
Decks from documents
Generate a PowerPoint draft from a Word document or notes. In practice: Turn a six-page proposal into a first-draft pitch deck.
Agents
Build or use assistants that handle a defined task such as answering HR questions or triaging requests. In practice: An internal assistant that answers “how do I submit an expense?” from your own policy documents.

Licensing and deployment notes
- Eligibility: Copilot requires an eligible Microsoft 365 base plan and an Entra ID account. Check which plans are eligible, because small-business and enterprise Copilot licences are different SKUs.
- Permissions matter: Copilot can surface anything the user can already open. Oversharing in SharePoint and OneDrive becomes visible quickly, so clean up permissions before you roll it out.
- Data handling: Prompts and responses stay within the Microsoft 365 service boundary and are not used to train the underlying models. Confirm the current terms with Microsoft for your region.
- Governance: Sensitivity labels, retention policies and Purview controls apply. SharePoint Advanced Management can help find overshared sites.
- Adoption: Plan training and pilot groups first. Usage reports show who is getting value from the licence.
- Availability: Features roll out in stages and can vary by app, language, region and tenant.
