Microsoft Intune
Intune is Microsoft’s device and app management service. It lets IT enforce security settings, deploy apps and wipe lost devices, whether they are company-owned or personal.
- Best for: companies with laptops and phones that hold company data
- Where it runs: cloud service managing Windows, Mac, iOS and Android
- Included in: Business Premium, E3, E5 and F3
- Add-on suites available
What Intune does for your business
The features clients ask about most, with an example of each in daily use.
Device enrolment
Enroll company laptops and phones so they receive settings and apps automatically. In practice: A new hire’s laptop arrives at home and configures itself on first sign-in with Windows Autopilot.
Security baselines and compliance rules
Require disk encryption, screen locks and updates, and flag devices that fall short. In practice: Block access to email from a laptop that has not been updated for 30 days.
App deployment
Push apps and updates to devices without visiting each machine. In practice: Install the accounting app and Microsoft 365 apps on every finance laptop.
App protection for personal phones
Protect company data inside apps like Outlook without managing the whole phone. In practice: Wipe only company data from a personal phone when an employee leaves.
Conditional access
Allow access to company apps only from healthy, managed devices. In practice: Staff can open SharePoint only from compliant laptops.
Remote wipe and lock
Lock or erase a lost device from the admin portal. In practice: A stolen laptop is wiped the same day.

Licensing and deployment notes
- Intune Plan 1 vs Plan 2 vs Suite: Plan 1 covers core device and app management. Plan 2 and the Suite add advanced capabilities such as endpoint privilege management, remote help and analytics.
- Identity dependency: Conditional access and device compliance rely on Microsoft Entra ID, so check your Entra licensing too.
- Windows Autopilot: Autopilot needs devices registered by the supplier or through hardware hashes, plus enrollment profiles.
- Mixed fleets: Mac, iOS and Android are supported, with different feature depth by platform.
- BYOD: Use app protection policies for personal devices and full enrollment for company-owned devices.
- Existing tools: If you use another MDM, plan the migration carefully; running two managers on one device causes conflicts.
